The annual Rolestown Christmas party was held last Saturday night for the senior students and their spouses, it was held in Cicero's Italian Restaurant in Ashbourne. We had a "Kris Kindle" on presents, and some of the ideas were novel to say the least. Morris is displaying a lovely head garment and moustache that he received, to prove the point. |
On Friday the 8th of September 7 students from the Inverclyde branch of the Scottish Tae Kwon-Do Academy undertook there blackbelt grading under the very watchfull eye of Master John Darcy 6th degree blackbelt and Action International Martial Arts Association's European director. The students to grade for 1st degree were Michael Grant(10), Jade Williams(10), Nicky Jackson(13), Shannon Gault(13) and Rebecca Boyle(13). With all students taking up Tae Kwon-Do between september and december of 2002. Also tested for 2nd degree were Samantha Todd(12) and Matthew McEwan(18) these two students gained there blackbelts in November of 2004 and have been training for the past 7 years. The grading was held at Crawfurdsburn Community Centre on the 8th of September. They also had to attend three two hour training sessions in preperation for the grading as well as two hours on the night itself.
The grading consisted of patterns, sparring, set-sparring, destruction, grapling, self-defence ans as if that was not enough of the physical stuff the students then had to take a threory test at the end of the night. All students achieved high marks on the night with Michael Grant being pointed out on many occassions by Master Darcy for his technique and the power coming from the youngest student on the night. This was the first blackbelt grading to be held by the Scottish Tae Kwon-Do Academy which is run by Chief Instructor Mr Charles Boyle who achieved the grade of 5th degree blackbelt earlier in the year. Mr Boyle has ran a very successfull club over the past 8 years and gets stronger with each year that passes, with a membership base of 85 students and still growing.
There are a total of 21 blackbelts within the club now and they are starting to move up the ranks as well with 1, 3rd dan and 2 second dans. And also with students starting to open up there own clubs in the area. If anyone is interested in Joining Tae Kwon-Do log on to www.inverclyde-taekwondo.com to find a club near you. Summer Camp - Phoenix, USA
|
This years Summer Training Camp took place in Flagstaff, AZ and we had many internationally renowned Masters as guest instructors, as well as students from as far a field as Hawaii and Holland. We had great comradeship this year due in particular to the attendance of so many teenagers. Every instructor can be proud of their students and the spirit of friendship that they showed to everyone that they encountered. A special thank you should go to the many Parents that travelled many thousands of miles to allow their children to train under the guidance of Grandmaster Cho, Master Ameris and Master Darcy.
The Summer Camp was not all-work and no-play; we visited the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas as well as many of the other attractions that Arizona has to offer. I would like to especially thank the families who opened their homes to us and who displayed such hospitality that it will not be forgotten easily. We look forward to repaying their kindness and generosity when they come to visit us next year, a special word of thanks to the Corupe family, who entertained, feed and roomed so many of us.

Rolestown Black Belt Testing
|
The A.I.M.A.A. 2006 International black belt testing will take place in Rolestown hall Co.Dublin on Sunday the 23rd of July.
The students and instructors will be examined by master John Darcy. Up to the rank of fourth degree will be present for testing on the day.
This years Black Belt Testing was a fine example of how AIMAA standards have remained at the highest level. We had 34 students testing for belt grades ranging from 1 st degree to 4 th degree on the day. The testing required students to be both physically and mentally fit and to show their understanding of the principals of Tae Kwon-Do as well as the fighting, self-defence and destruction skills that are required of their grades. The youngest student testing for their Black Belt was only ten years old. On the day we had representatives from the majority of the Cho's Tae Kwon-Do schools in Ireland present as well as Scotland .
There was over 20 senior Black belt Instructors present on the day and everyone agreed that all the students put 100% into everything that was asked of them by Master Darcy. The testing took over 3 hours, and the average temperature on Sunday in the hall was approximately 30 degrees, so it was also a testament of their training and that of the training methods employed by AIMAA instructors, that they performed so well and lasted the intense pace. For many students that day was the accumulation of many years of training, sacrifice and perseverance, on Sunday the 23 rd of July 2006 this all paid off. Congratulations to all the Instructors, Parents and especially the students of Grand Master Hee IL Cho's Tae Kwon-Do for making the testing a most memorable occasion.

A.I.M.A.A. Nationals fly by at the Airport! |
| |
On May 13th 2006 the Airport School of Cho's TKD host the 2006 National Championships. This is the second time that the Airport had held this competition in four years and after a very successful tournament in 2002, the pressure was on.
The day began with the adult black belts sparring. These rounds saw some heavy hitting in the over 85kg section and some very dynamic & technical fighting in the lighter divisions. With a mix of AMAA TKD students, kickboxers and TKD fighters from other styles, this made for a very entertaining category.
The juniors were up next. This started with the 4-6 year olds and the 7 years olds showing some great displays of skill and perseverance. Of course, there were some tears but this didn't stop these kids from having a great time.
The event continued with the 8-9 year olds up as far as the 16-17 years old categories. All of these junior categores proved to be extremely exciting with great displays of all styles of stand-up fighting.
Following this was the adults colour belt sections. Again, there was a good mix of different martial art styles fighting. Both mens and womens categories were very entertaining, with all fighters giving it their 'all'.
Next up was the power breaking. The boards were extremely tough, however this didn't stop some of the competitors going through them like hot knives through butter.
The last event of the day was the skills breaking division. This category saw some great displays of explosive speed combined with some very 'gymnastic' jumping techniques that wowed the crowd.
The event went off 'hitch' free and ran only 20 mins over the due time.
The organisers would like to thank all the administrators, referees, judges and set-up/clean up volunteers.

Airport TKD News
Saturday the 25th of March saw the Airport School of Cho's Tae Kwon-Do host an AIMAA colour belt testing in the ALSAA Sports Complex, Dublin Airport. The day started off with the Tae Kwon Do Panthers (4-7 year olds) testing for their 'Panthers Skills'. The eight Panther skills include teamwork, focus, balance, coordination, memory, discipline, fitness & control and these kids showed that you're never too young to develop these skills. This was followed by a 1 hour black belt kickboxing workout class which
saw plenty of sweat! Then it was down to the main event of the day - the colour belt testing. Approximately 50 students tested on the day ranging from white belt up as high as red belt. The red belts successfully testing for their high red belts and now start their countdown to their black belt testing later this year. We also had students from visiting schools testing - Rolestown TKD, DCU TKD, Shankill TKD and Santry TKD. All students proved that perseverance and discipline is something that the Cho's Tae Kwon-Do students have in abundance. The testing saw the students being put through their paces by AIMAA European Director, Master John Darcy. Traditional techniques, fighting techniques, self defense, sparring, body conditioning and board breaking made for a very intense day but all students battled on and, deservedly, earned the belts.
Well done to all students on a very successful day!
